How a geyser repair is priced

Almost every legitimate repair in Kolkata is billed the same way:

• A visit or inspection charge. Standard practice. Ask whether it is waived or adjusted against the repair if you go ahead.
• Parts, named individually. “Heating element”, “thermostat”, “thermal cut-out” — not a single undifferentiated “repair charge”.
• Labour. Sometimes bundled with the part, sometimes separate. Either is fine as long as it is stated before work starts.
• A warranty on the work. Commonly a short period on labour, and separately on the part.

Which faults are cheap, and which are not

Roughly in ascending order:

1. Least expensive: a worn washer or a leaking connection; a drain valve; resetting and diagnosing a tripped thermal cut-out.
2. Inexpensive: thermostat replacement; pressure relief valve; descaling as part of a service.
3. Mid-range: heating element replacement — the most common real repair; element plus gasket where the seal has perished.
4. Higher: anode rod replacement combined with a full descale and flush on a neglected tank.
5. Not a repair at all: a corroded tank leaking from the body. This is a replacement.

What actually moves the price

• Which component failed. The dominant factor by far.
• Original versus compatible parts. Both are legitimate. The price differs and you should be told which you are getting.
• Capacity and mounting. A 25-litre unit in an awkward position takes longer than a 10-litre at chest height.
• How long the fault has been left. A leaking connection ignored for months can corrode the surrounding fittings.
• Whether the tank is sound. This is the difference between a repair and a new geyser.

Signals to be wary of

• A firm price quoted on the phone. Nobody can diagnose a geyser without seeing it. A phone quote is either a guess or a hook.
• Pressure to replace the whole unit without inspecting the tank. Replacement is sometimes right — but only after someone has established the tank has failed.
• Refusal to show you the removed part. Any honest repairer hands it over.
• An unusually low visit charge with vague repair pricing. The margin has to come from somewhere.
• “Authorised service centre” language from an independent operator. Worth checking, because it is often simply untrue.

Repair or replace, on cost grounds

Repair generally wins when the tank is sound and one component has failed — which covers most faults. Replacement is the better spend when the tank is corroded and leaking from the body, when an old unit has needed several repairs in quick succession, or when a very old geyser is costing noticeably more to run than a modern 5-star equivalent.

How to keep the bill down

The single biggest lever is servicing. Elements fail early because scale is left on them; tanks corrode early because the anode rod is never checked. An annual service is a fraction of the cost of the failures it prevents, and booking it in October rather than during the December rush usually costs less too.

The second lever is not delaying. A dripping connection is cheap. The same leak left until it reaches the electrical terminals is not.
