Geyser & Microwave Service — geyser and microwave repair in Kolkata

Why Is My Microwave Not Heating?

If the turntable spins and the timer counts down but food stays cold, the control side works and the fault is in the high-voltage circuit. What that means and whether it is worth repairing.

Short answer: if the turntable spins, the light comes on and the timer counts down but the food stays cold, the control side of the oven is working and the fault is in the high-voltage circuit — usually the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. This is a repair, not a replacement, on most ovens.

Why “it runs but does not heat” is a specific diagnosis

A microwave has two largely separate systems. The control side runs the display, the timer, the turntable motor and the interior light. The high-voltage side generates the microwave energy that actually heats food.

When everything looks normal but nothing gets warm, you have effectively confirmed the control side is fine. That narrows the fault considerably, and it is why describing the symptom accurately on the phone helps a technician arrive with the right part.

Do not open it. This one is genuinely dangerous

This is the one appliance repair where the standard advice is unusually firm. A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged. It has to be discharged deliberately, with the right tool, by someone who knows where it is.

Plenty of household repairs are reasonable to attempt. This is not one of them, and no amount of care compensates for a stored charge you cannot see.

The likely causes, in order

Magnetron failure

The magnetron produces the microwaves. It is the most common cause of a no-heat fault on an older oven, and it often announces itself first with a louder-than-usual hum or a faint burning smell.

High-voltage diode or capacitor

Both are cheaper than a magnetron and fail reasonably often. A failed diode frequently produces a loud buzzing while the oven runs. Testing these is part of a proper diagnosis rather than replacing the magnetron on assumption.

Transformer

Less common, usually accompanied by a burning smell or the MCB tripping.

Door interlock switches

Microwaves use several interlock switches so the oven cannot run with the door open. A partially failed switch can let the oven appear to run while blocking the high-voltage circuit. This is a safety system working roughly as intended, and it is never bypassed.

The one thing that destroys microwaves fastest

Running the oven empty. With no food to absorb the energy, the magnetron absorbs its own output. A few seconds is survivable; a full cycle often is not. If someone has run yours empty and it stopped heating shortly afterwards, that is very likely the explanation.

Is it worth repairing?

More often than people assume.

  • Worth repairing: a diode, capacitor or interlock switch on almost any oven; a magnetron on a mid-range, convection or built-in oven where replacement would cost far more.
  • Usually not worth it: a magnetron on a basic entry-level solo oven that is already well past its warranty, or any oven where the cavity has rusted through or the door seal is damaged.

A rusted cavity or a damaged door is a genuine reason to replace rather than repair, because both compromise the seal that keeps microwave energy inside the box.

What to have ready when you call

Three things make the visit faster: the brand, the model number (on a sticker at the back or inside the door frame), and a precise description. “Runs but does not heat” and “will not start at all” point to completely different faults and different parts.

Preventing the next one

  • Never run the oven empty.
  • Cover food. Most sparking faults begin as splatter baked onto the waveguide cover, and a damaged cover can go on to kill the magnetron.
  • Wipe the cavity while it is still slightly warm — residue lifts easily then and sets hard once cold.
  • Keep the vents clear. An oven pushed flush against a wall runs hot, and heat is what kills control boards.

Frequently asked questions

My microwave runs but does not heat. What is wrong?

The control side is working, so the fault is in the high-voltage circuit — usually the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or transformer.

Can I repair a microwave that is not heating myself?

No. A microwave capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged and must be discharged deliberately with the right tool. This is not a DIY repair under any circumstances.

Is a magnetron replacement worth it?

On a convection, built-in or mid-range oven, usually yes. On a basic entry-level solo oven already past warranty, replacing the appliance is often better value.

What destroys a microwave fastest?

Running it empty. With no food to absorb the energy, the magnetron absorbs its own output.
