Geyser repair and service overview

We repair, service, install and maintain domestic water heaters across Kolkata. Work is carried out at your home: a technician arrives with tools and the parts that most commonly fail, diagnoses the fault, tells you what it will cost, and completes the repair in the same visit wherever the part is one we carry.

We handle both types of unit found in most Kolkata homes — storage water heaters (the horizontal or vertical tank mounted in the bathroom) and instant geysers (small, tankless units for a kitchen sink or single tap).

Problems we repair

These are the faults we are called out for most often, and what usually causes them.

• No hot water at all — normally a burnt-out heating element or a thermal cut-out that has tripped. The cut-out is a safety device, so if it has tripped we find out why rather than simply resetting it.
• Water heats but never gets hot — most often heavy scale on the element, or a thermostat that has drifted out of calibration. Descaling frequently restores full performance without replacing anything.
• Leaking — a drip at the inlet or outlet is usually a worn washer or a failed connection. Water coming from the body of the tank is different: a corroded tank cannot be patched safely and needs replacement.
• Tripping the MCB, or a shock from the tap — this normally means the element has failed to earth. Switch the geyser off at the mains and stop using it. In a wet room this is a genuine electrical hazard, not an inconvenience.
• Not enough hot water — sediment building up in the tank reduces its usable capacity, so a 25-litre unit starts behaving like a 15-litre one.
• Noise while heating — crackling or rumbling is sediment on the element. Not dangerous, but it wastes electricity and shortens element life.
• Pressure relief valve discharging — often a failed valve, sometimes a thermostat fault causing over-heating. Either way it needs attention.
• Faulty installation — insecure mounting, missing earthing, or inlet and outlet connected the wrong way round.

Types of geysers we service

• Storage water heaters — 6, 10, 15 and 25 litre tanks, the standard bathroom installation.
• Instant / tankless geysers — 1 to 3 litre units for kitchens and single-tap use.
• Electric geysers — the great majority of units in Kolkata flats and houses.
• Glass-lined and stainless steel tanks — both handled, though the tank type affects whether corrosion can be repaired.

Annual servicing and descaling

Parts of Kolkata have hard water, which scales up a heating element far faster than the manual assumes. A service covers descaling the element, flushing sediment from the tank, checking the thermostat and cut-out, testing the pressure relief valve, and inspecting the anode rod that protects the tank from corrosion. October — before daily winter use begins — is the sensible time.

Repair or replace?

Repair is normally the sensible choice when the tank is sound and a single component has failed — element, thermostat, cut-out or valve. Replacement makes more sense when the tank itself has corroded and is leaking from the body, when an old unit is failing repeatedly, or when a very old geyser is costing noticeably more to run than a modern 5-star equivalent.
